Vice Principal I was initially attracted to joining the British School of Guangzhou due to the challenge that it represented. The School was a very different place when I arrived in 2010 with our oldest cohort just about to embark on their IGCSE courses. During the interim time the school has grown to offer an education to students aged 1-19, the facilities have been developed year on year and the students have achieved fantastic sets of examinations results that are comparable with the best schools in the world.I have been fortunate enough to be teaching for 20 years and have fulfilled a number of roles prior to my current position as Head of Secondary. I joined the British School of Guangzhou as the Deputy Head of Secondary in 2010 and was promoted to the role of Head of Secondary school in 2012. Prior to moving to Guangzhou I have performed a variety of roles including Head of Year, Head of Faculty, Head of Department and Head of House. I have always enjoyed sport and physical fitness and I have been active in a number of sports including football, cricket, kick boxing, scuba diving and cycling. My other main passion is travel and the perfect holiday allows me to combine these two passions. In my ten years of international teaching, my wife and I have been fortunate enough to hike, skydive, kayak, canoe, trek, dive and climb many beautiful places across 5 continents at the same time as experiencing different cultures and societies.

Principal I began my teaching career in 1982 at a small village School in Norfolk. However, it was during my 6 years at Bangkok Patana School that I discovered my passion for international education. After 6 years as a Deputy Head in Wiltshire, I was ready for another international challenge, and in 2004, I helped to set up the British School of Beijing as the founding Deputy Head. After 4 successful years in Beijing, I joined the British School of Guangzhou and have spent the last 6 years overseeing the move from a Primary School of 175 students to our current position as the school of choice for almost 1000 students.As an art and sports graduate I am keenly aware that the very best schools are able to motivate all students, whatever their talents. I am particularly proud of the positive learning environment that underpins our success and is so often noted by visitors to our school. We have an incredibly dedicated and professional team and I look forward to the challenge of the next few years as we strive to become recognised as the premium international school within China. On a personal level, I have two grown up sons who both worked alongside me at the British School of Beijing. One is currently teaching in Sao Paulo, while the other is now here with me at BSG teaching Year 4. When I am not working I love a physical challenge and prefer to spend holidays, hiking and cycling rather than lying on a beach.I take great pleasure in seeing our school play a key role within the local community and enjoy receiving feedback or discussing future developments with parents. Do feel free to drop in and share your thoughts with me when you are next visiting the British School.

Head of Early Years From a very early age, children were my passion and I aspired to a career that involved making a difference to young people’s lives. Having achieved an honours degree in Psychology (specialising in Child Psychology) from Loughborough University, I then decided to complete a PGCE in Primary and enter into the teaching profession. I taught in the UK for several years before embarking on an international career. My husband and I moved to Spain, where I taught in a British school for eleven years. During this period I became Deputy Head of School.Whilst in Spain, my husband and I decided we wanted to adopt a baby from China. During the ‘waiting’ period we thought it would be a good idea to move to China for a year to learn more about the culture of where our future baby would come from. So, in 2008, we travelled to Guangzhou with the intention of staying one year and then returning to Spain. That was six years ago! After many years of waiting for a baby, my husband and I were finally matched with a gorgeous baby girl in 2011, who we named Rosie. Since then we have adopted a sister for Rosie, who is called Jasmine. Both our girls bring so much joy to our lives and we feel very grateful to be able to raise them in their native country. I love nothing more than spending time as a family, especially when we are hopping on an aeroplane to an exotic destination for a fun family holiday.

Head of Primary I am very fortunate to be joining The British School of Guangzhou in its 10th year of operation.  With student numbers over 1000, it certainly is an exciting time to join the number one international school of choice in Guangzhou.I started my teaching career in NSW, Australia, before deciding to take a year out to travel the world.  That was 15 years ago, and I now find myself living and teaching in China, which will be the fourth country I have taught in during my career. I taught for seven years in Nottingham, UK, before moving to Dubai to be the Deputy Head of Repton Prep School, Dubai.  After three successful years there, I moved to be Assistant Principal at the Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, which is one of the most well-known and established schools in South East Asia. I was fortunate enough to spend some of that time as Acting Principal of the Primary Campus.  After four successful years in KL, I moved to Guangzhou and am excited at the prospect of spending some time getting to know more about China.Someone once wrote, “In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn”, which is a nice way to look at how I view education.  Through teaching I have learnt many lessons on the way children view the world, the way children learn about the world and how we as adults can learn about the world from a child’s perspective. Learning is a continuous process, both inside and outside of the school walls, and is born of natural curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and a desire to always do one's best.  Teaching internationally has fed my natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge and I strive to promote such values in the students of any school I am involved with.  This fits nicely with the school's aim to promote a “l(fā)ifelong love of learning”.I am joined in Guangzhou by my wife, Sarah (who herself is an educationalist and experienced school leader), and two boys, Oscar and Lachlan.  We are excited to be part of the BSG community and look forward to the challenges ahead.
